"Giles007" (Giles007)

I was recently in a C6 Corvette and noticed that the car comes with an ashtray built into the center console. I don't recall seeing an ashtray in a newer car for many years now. Any other cars still come with an ashtray?

Do cars even still come with cigarette lighters or do those plugs even have a function? I never thought about this before.
To answer your question; I haven't seen hardly any new cars with ash trays.

Most manufacturers offer a "smokers package" now, which includes the lighter in the plug, and either an ash tray insert into a cubby, or a cupholder ashtray.

Fact: If you smoke and toss your butts out the window of your car, you're a prick.

I'm pretty sure the Land Cruiser 200 still does since its a big seller in smoking markets.

I learned something today. :D
So if you don't get the smokers package, does that mean the plug thing isn't functional?

No. It just adds the lighter that is inserted in the socket.

I was just looking at a BMW i3 with a "Smoker's Package" included. Sort of ironic I suppose.

I've seen a few cupholder ashtrays. I hate those things!

My '13 BMW 135is has an ashtray and lighter. I don't recall there being any smoker's package on the window sticker either, I think that's just how it came.
No idea if the M235i has one...

The plugs are there but labeled '12v outlet' now. No lighter

Believe it or not, the plug you use to charge your phone used to be for lighting up. I think Torch or someone did a write up on the history of the socket. Kind of interesting that someone thought "wait, we can use this to power various electronics!"
Up until a few years ago, just about every car came with a push-in lighter in the socket and some form of ash tray. Hell, my '07 Mazda6 has this. Recently, Washington decided cars shouldn't encourage you to smoke. So the lighters went away, and the sockets got little flappy covers labeled "12V". Ash trays got replaced by little cubbies where you can throw your shit while it charges.
Smoking packages nowadays give you a little cup-shaped ashtray and a lighter. What's crazy is that you can get these two things from any auto parts store for under $10, and yet some manufacturers charge upwards of $30 for the "package".

Good info. It's all in the details.
Funny how small things change over time. I think stuff like this is interesting because the newest passenger car my family owns is from 1975.

I'm a little pissed at Nissan. My car has an ash tray and a cigarette lighter. The only problem is it's where the cup holder WOULD be.

I remember my Grandpa's old Town Car had these tiny little ashtrays on the rear doors. Really little; you could smoke like one cigarette and it would be full. Since my sister and I were the only ones who ever sat in the back seat, I thought it was pretty irresponsible of Lincoln to encourage kids to smoke.
At that age, it never occurred to me that adults sat in the back seats of cars.

follow up:
Do any cars come with USB ports yet? Seeing as the 3v plug is more useful now a days than the 12v lighter socket.

Many do. My Fiat 500s have one in the glove box that is also a functioning USB port for the Infotainment system.

You know what's even harder to find? A virgin ashtray for a 27 year old car. Mine was trashed when i bought the car 16 years ago. I want an unused one for it just because....
